Staff / Principal Software Engineer - Healthcare AI & Cloud Architect

Staff-level software engineer and technical leader with 15 years of experience designing, building and leading production-grade platforms that power healthcare documentation workflows, enable low-latency interactive multi-track audio in the browser, and provide the AI training pipelines behind AWS HealthScribe.

Chief Technology Officer at Xelex AI, where I spearheaded development of our HIPAA-compliant training-data platform. My work sits at the intersection of human-centered design, cloud-native architecture and regulated production environments, where reliability, security and iteration speed must coexist. I have repeatedly taken complex ideas from concept through architecture, compliance and large-scale deployment.

Security-first cloud architect with SOC2 Type 2 and HIPAA experience, passionate about delivering human-centered, scalable solutions. Strong proficiency in TypeScript, Node.js and SQL databases with hands-on LLM prompt engineering and evaluation experience, and proven ability to build rapid prototypes and convert them into maintainable products.

Professional Experience

Chief Technology Officer – Xelex AI

Remote / Johnson City, TN 2020 – Present
  • Led end-to-end development of a HIPAA-compliant AI training-data platform and served as a key partner for AWS HealthScribe from pre-market validation through post-launch refinement. The system supports auditing ambient applications, text classification, LLM accuracy auditing, hallucination identification and synthetic exam room conversations.
  • Designed and iterated on LLM prompts for summarization, translation and classification tasks, optimizing AI model outputs and feeding results into accuracy auditing workflows.
  • Designed configuration-driven pipelines and human-centered workflows that reduced bespoke project onboarding time to one day, enabling clients to spin up new training-data projects in minutes.
  • Implemented robust workflow controls and multi-tiered quality assurance, integrating distributed annotators and automatic QA to ensure data accuracy.
  • Established a security-first culture, leading penetration testing, encryption practices and access-control audits; achieved SOC2 Type 2 attestation and ensured HIPAA/HITECH compliance.
  • Collaborated with executives, clinicians and data scientists to prioritize features, manage budgets and align the product roadmap with customer needs.

Senior Software Engineer – ActionVFX

Johnson City, TN 2020 – 2021
  • Maintained and extended e-commerce backend, digital asset management and media-delivery systems using Ruby on Rails, Node.js, PostgreSQL and AWS.
  • Partnered with design teams to develop a modern, responsive storefront.
  • Mentored a front-end developer into a full-stack engineer.

Chief Technology Officer – WebChartMD

Remote / Johnson City, TN 2019 – 2020
  • Owned the product roadmap for WebChartMD, coordinating with executives and clinicians to evolve the medical documentation platform.
  • Led software development and cloud architecture, transitioning monolithic services to microservices on AWS for improved scalability and resilience.
  • Implemented CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code, reducing deployment times and downtime. Prepared the organization for SOC2 and HIPAA audits.

VP of Software Development – WebChartMD

Remote / Johnson City, TN 2015 – 2019
  • Architected and delivered a RESTful API and microservices backend enabling integration with partner systems and mobile applications.
  • Designed and built a single-page web application using JavaScript and virtual DOM, increasing adoption and user satisfaction.
  • Developed the "WebChartMD: Dictate and Review" iOS audio recorder in Swift, extending functionality to mobile and collecting audio data for future AI models.
  • Led and mentored development team, establishing agile methodologies and coding standards.

Development Manager – WebChartMD

Johnson City, TN 2013 – 2015
  • Developed and managed a high-performing engineering team.
  • Migrated application database from MS SQL Server to PostgreSQL, improving query performance and eliminating licensing fees.
  • Designed and executed a cloud migration to AWS, reducing hosting costs by $15k per month and improving reliability.

Technical Co-Founder – Musocrat

Johnson City, TN 2011 – 2014
  • Engineered a real-time multitrack audio mixing server with VST plug-in support, using Node.js and C++ bindings for SoX and PortAudio to achieve low-latency processing.
  • Built a Web Audio API-based multitrack player, enabling interactive mixing for users. Developed C++ extensions with node-gyp to bridge high-performance audio libraries into JavaScript.
